I like Sumi Jo but a young soprano named Erika Miklosa whose performance is available on youtube is much better in this aria.

@jnetusil exactly what were YOU listening to??? At the exact point before she stopped singing, right when she moved her fist at 4:51 she went a semi-tone above the intented note....and rly, what i did in my comment was praise her...but ppl with untrained eyes like yours, only see what they want to see in other ppl's comments....so sad...

wow. fantastic. thanks for posting!

@Iareto well i think the tones being harsh is probably the pronounciation. you have to understand, she is not french and probably doesn't even know the language. think about how incredibly hard it is to accurately sing something that isn't even your own language like this. either way, I thought the performance was great~

June Anserson is the BEST Dinorah ever.
That's it. Just listen to it!

I think that there are many sopranos can do it, but no one do the biggest passage with legato, only Callas DO it, I think it must mean something, but she's a great-now I'm speaking about Sumi Jo-

I think the sopranos themselves choose how they improvise their coloratura at the end as a way of showcasing their talent! Ombres legeres provides an excellent way for the most talented sopranos to do this, however I'm not sure whats written in the score! Coloratura scat is a great way to describe it, but a cadenza would be the technical term. Another example would be Ardon gli incensi for Lucia's mad scene...Sills cadenza is soooo different from Callas!

agreed, what really irritates me is how Callas fans are blindly fanatical about her, ignorantly professing her vocal superiority, when even in reality, she could never sing light French lyric roles like this tastefully, even before her voice started to decline (i.e., when she got thin and hot). Some of her later recordings are just aweful, on could drive a truck though her vibrato its so wide and slow and unmusical.

I've listened to several different versions of this aria now, and they all seem to do something different with the end. In this one she almost seemed to perform a "coloratura scat." I'm not really able to find much about this piece--is the soprano directed to improvise at the end? And please, no snide comments. Yes, I'm a newbie.
