  • I feel sure the stiffness of your frame has a lot to do with the diagonal gussets, they are in compression so will barely flex, that leaves only a short length in the middle to really bend and as you mentioned it is nice and thick.

  • Exactly.

They also prevent the horizontal members from twisting (there's a fair bit of torsional load on them because the wheels are offset from the beam)

  • Just came across your plans and WOW!!! what a great set of plans. I'm going to purchase your plans.

What I would like to know and I have not read all the comments, is do you have a total cost of this project??

  • I spent about $100, but I used a lot of junk I had lying around. It totally depends no what prices you end up paying for the parts. So I can't really estimate your cost.

  • What size is the timber in the frame? I dont have access to much machinery for dressing materials. I can easily buy something like 90x19 or 70x19 Dressed pine. Is this suitable for the machine frame?

  • Anywahere from 16 to 19 mm will do. The plans make allowances for that. Mine is 16 mm, because I started with different leftover lumber that I planed down to the same thickness.

  • I have just decided. When I have a house with space for a shop, I'm making my own band saw, and I'll be using Matthias's plans.

  • You are a freaking genius, I bow before you !

  • Pure genius.

  • The satisfaction that comes with building your own tools must be great!

  • Practical thinking !!!

  • @Matthiaswandel We have a small DeWalt bandsaw at work but I don't have a saw at home, when I compare the performance of your saw to the DeWalt it seems the smart option is to build a saw not buy as it is pretty horrible to use and very noisy.
