At around 1:05, Fuyubachi, the old man, realizes they're all dead. His first indication seems to be the fact that he still has the last pill, even though he already took it. He then realizes they're not casting shadows. A few hints: Zebra sees the man walk away from a very definitive suicide; they all see they're friend Fox, aka Makoto, as Lil' Slugger, even though he already died in his cell; and finally their appearance as ghosts in the photograph taken at the end.

It is my understanding that he ran because they werent afraid, but maybe I interpreted differently...

@sieyk The had shadows prior to the building's destruction and in the building. After that, they didnt.

you're right its the "real little slugger," but Lil' Slugger isn't....*prepare for mindf*ck*...real, because he's part of everyone's sub-conscious to cope with stress/issues when they're cornered. Lil' Slugger isn't a person (you'd know this if you watched the entire series) the fact that he had a shadow is irrelevant, so Lil' Slugger didin't run away because "he heard but couldn't see them as ghosts" or was scared. he probably ran off, because realized they were ALREADY DEAD, but not scared.
