The Burmese government is pressuring Kachin Baptist and Roman Catholic churches to remove two mountaintop crosses to make way for construction of a large scale hydro-power project. The crosses were erected at separate locations on Loiyang Bum Mountain, situated east of the Irrawaddy River's Confluence (Mali-N'Mai Zup in Kachin), 27 miles north of Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State. The two historic crosses are over 100 years old and have been targeted for removal since the authorities started dam construction in December, 2009.
