I did a little mosaic in my Mom's shower a couple years ago - used leftovers from a bigger tile job in my place for a floor mosaic. I didn't break up the tiles, but cut them into random sizes with the tile saw. I had in mind to create a VanGogh style pattern with small rectangular tiles. But after laying it out it was nixed by my husband. Got the main field tiles on a close out for 48c each, so it was a pretty reasonable cost overall, but there weren't quite enough to do the shower floor, too. I made it a roll-in shower due to Mom's mobility issues, with a little bench.
However, if you are thinking of doing the same, make the shower bigger - there's almost not quite enough room to get in to help Mom in this shower. I was limited because of the original size of the bathroom, it had one of those old, tiny little bathtubs...
