CONSTELLATIONS is a two-channel video installation in three movements. Each movement is compiled from a series of one to three minute vignettes dealing with notions of power, ownership, and the idea of incorporated capital. These pieces examine group structures (their function and form) ranging from the amorphous to the methodically ordered.
The three movements of Constellations present a series of organizational structures with formal similarities; each examines an "evolutionary" step of group structures. The first movement highlights a sporadic and amorphous arrangement of groups. The Second movement depicts linear structures, ,and begins to examine groups as human constructs. Finally, the third movement explores the relationships between violence, militarism, and infrastructure development.
The universal theme among movements is that of the individual sacrificing certain freedoms (sometimes few, sometimes all) by incorporating itself into a larger organization. Though this amalgamation it's potentially stronger than the lone individual, the group's function is minimally impacted by the function/desire of the individual. Conversely, no one individual is accountable for the actions of the group once incorporated, thus framing the potential for a "mob mentality."
