On March 12, 1984, the National Union of Mineworkers called a national strike. At the time, 90% of the UK relied on coal as the primary source of energy. The following is a talk given by Dr. Anna Clark who lived in the UK during the time of the strike to illustrate the political and cultural backdrop of the musical Billy Elliot.
