The quandary of hiring a motorbike in Bali is that despite the law stating every tourist requires an international license, very rarely will you be asked to show it when hiring a bike.

To make matters even more confusing, tourists are often targeted by police with fines resulting in no official record. It is common knowledge, a good haggler can get these 200,000 Rupiah fines down to 50,000 Rupiah, which lead to the question, who pockets the fine, the police or the State?

Before hiring a motorbike, it is important to check with your travel insurer, whether you are covered for an accident or damage to a hired bike, if you don't have the correct driving license.

  • So you have the right to video the police doing their job? You need to stay the hell away and MYOFB. The only corrupt thing in the video was you, troublemaker. If the majority of westerners behave like you it's no wonder the people of Bali dislike us. You don't mind tucking in to their beautiful food, you disrespectful lowlife.l

  • @overlander You should consantrate how westerners behave in Bali or in anywhere in world to people.Instead of complaining 3 dolars 5 dolars corruptions in traffic police or moneychanger.I can show you some of corruptions which made by foreigners like million dollars. They even not ashamed to steal a government project what aimed to help villagers. This is only one example. There are 1000 of them here in Bali.

  • @gerardwashere yeah how about you fucking manage 240 million people? you're probably from some bitch country that has like 1 million in population and with democracy. have your life ever get threatened because of your skin??? if not, then shut the fuck up and suck your own dick

  • @sdejanip Yes and No. In countries where the first language is not english you require an International driving permit (IDP) at least and at most you will have to get the native licence ie. In China you will have to get a chinese licence before you can hire a car etc. In Countries like th USA, NZ, UK etc your own Licence is acceptable even though it is still recomended you have an IDP. I have been pulled up for speeding on a few occasions in the USA and my Australian licence was enough. :(

  • Dude! Everyone knows that you need a motor bike license to ride a bike in Bali. lts the people who go to Bali and just grab a bike and have no license that put themself's and the Bali people at risk. So many people on holiday dont have a clue on how to ride a bike safe. More so over in Bali. Well done to the Bali police for keeping the streets safe. Your lucky the fine was only $25. Do that here in Australia and you would of been fined heaps. So dont have a cry because you never had a license.
