Music advocates in San Diego explore the possibilities of establishing in San Diego a music education program like El Sistema, founded several decades ago in Venezuela. El Sistema has 30 symphony orchestras, and at least 250,000 children who attend its music schools around the country, 90 percent of them from poor socio-economic backgrounds. El Sistema has given birth to virtuosos like Gustavo Dudamel. The possibility which is now a reality in L.A., was discussed during the South Bay El Sistema Summit organized by the Sweetwater Union High School District in Chula Vista, CA.
