IMO Apple have somewhat dropped the ball on the UK iPhone, having to pay full price for it on a expensive 18month contract. Normally contract phones are FREE or very low cost, and iPhone for that price should also be available on a pay-as-go basis.

It looks like a very exciting event, I love the hype and atmosphere these kind of launch events, bring up in people. It's really nice to see Apple making a show of it.

Sure, there were phones elsewhere, but that's like saying "why attend the Hollywood premiere when you can see it for less at the local movie house?" It's about the festivities and the uniqueness of the event.
