  • k coñazo!

  • I see your confusion. The lecture's primary audience (atleast from looking at those in the hall) seems to be dancers already familiar with the beat value and counting. Stylianos is working on choreography here, and how to make it interesting. The reason he counts 4-1 very quickly is because he needs the time to speak about the steps which he does until the next 2 beat begins. The audience is expected to ignore the 4-1, and instead focus on the 2,3,4 which is where most of the movement happens.

  • did someone actually buy one of the dvds on the vndance?

  • does any one know where he coaches in NY?

  • Correct...Whilst this clip was attributed to Lorna it was actually Mick Stylianos' back featuring and lecturing !!!

  • Thanks a lot, Lakushcananga! :-)

  • Great question. :) Naturally one who is not familiar with rumba would assume that he is counting in a rather odd way. Music used for rumba has a very distinct beat. which therefore gives dancers a bit of freedom with "playing with the music" (break on 2 not on 1). technically 2--3--4-1- is the same as 2--3--4--1 or 2--3--4---, there are many people who simply ignore saying count 1 all together. It's not so much preference, it simply allows choreography to be displayed a lot more crisp

  • I have a question: In all the dance lessons I have seen so far, the trainers are counting the rumba beat like this:

2----3----4-1 (listen to the gentleman at 1.30 for example)

Is that just a bad habit or is it something about the rumba beat which I have not understood yet? Genuine question, because I am a beginner and I think it should rather be counted very regularly across all four beats, like this:

2----3----4----1 (not 4-1 with a very short pause between the beats)

    Thanks for helping!

  • I guess Lorna Lee is the lady in the background. So the gentleman is Michael Stylianos?
