Take the wedding ring off around the damn lathe.
Had a friend that ripped the finger off and the tendon ALL THE WAY OUT FROM HIS FUCKING SHOULDER.
Don't fuck around with lathes.

thanks for the video - you might want to remove your wedding ring when doing this bud, this can go wrong in a hurry..

My impression was that using a Spindle Roughing Gouge for Face Grain turning is pretty dangerous. Its a very short tang and may not stand up to the impact of edge grain coming across. You are much safer if you use a bowl gouge which has the heft to do the job safely.
Thoughts?

Hi, Joel:
That is a good point and one that I confess I never even considered. I don't use a spindle roughing gouge for bowl blanks or anything of any size, but with the small size of this one I never thought about it being the wrong tool. I really doubt that the mass/momentum of a piece this small would make tang breakage and issue but since it also left the worst surface finish it was obviously the wrong tool for the job.
Take care
Bob
