This drive takes us south of Toms River through the Pine Barrens to Port Republic. The beginning of the video shows the destruction from all the construction of adding a 3rd lane. This 1st phase of the project has destroyed many beautiful roadside scenes as a 3rd lane is added between Toms River and Barnegat Township (Route 72). Many bridges have also had to be replaced. Once south of Route 72 the parkway becomes much nicer, with 2 lanes and lots of beautiful shapes along the way. Many beautiful old bridges and overpasses also, esp around the Bass River State Forest. The drive ends shortly after crossing the Mullica, a HUGE river.
Unfortunately, the bad news is this section of parkway south of Barnegat will also be expanded to 3 lanes in each direction. Countless trees will be bulldozed to make way for the additional lane and expanded shoulder. In addition, many bridges and overpasses will have to be replaced, not only ruining the scenery but adding even more cost to the project.
It is not only environmentally irresponsible to continue this project, but its also fiscally irresponsible as well. At a time when money is tight why should we be spending millions on a project that probably WONT improve traffic flow much and encourage more sprawl.
We have until July 2011 to make our voices heard. Hopefully the Governor can put a stop to this needless waste of trees and money.

The Pinelands Commision also should be told to put a stop to this project, as the 2nd phase will be disturbing state forests.

And the NJ Turnpike Authority, which will no doubt use the cost of this project to raise tolls

Please take action to stop this reckless, irresponsible project from continuing!
