Lecture by Professor Richard Muller of the University California, Berkeley. Taken from Lecture 7 of the spring 2006 webcasts of Physics For Future Presidents. Also known as Descriptive Introduction to Physics. Empahsis is on conceptual understanding, rather than mathematics.

This lecture deals with nuclear reactions, bombs and reactors. Also some information about the nuclear programme of Iraq in the 90s and North Korea recently.

  • how come you need an implosion?

  • The fissile material needs to be compressed into a small space in order to cause a chain reaction. An implosion is one way of achieving the so-called critical mass quickly enough to cause a chain reaction.

  • the chart he shows around 1:30 is flawed, the ignition points for the explosive lenses are wrong. and the boundaries between the different types of explosives (slow burning and fast burning) are no straight lines, they need to have parabolic shape.

and although two layers of explosive lenses are used in a few weapons, one layer normally does the job. another layer makes it redundant, but thats not needed when your igniters are good enough.

  • THat video possibly being one of the most comprehensives

  • Talking about what a terrorist group would or wouldn't do to build a bomb, and no mention whatsoever of "salted" bombs? I'm kind of disappointed.

If we want to prevent a nuclear attack by terrorists, we should guard our cobalt!

  • damn he has like 50 chalk boards wtf lol

  • Why can't we make nano nuclear reactors for energy or something instead creating a million different ways to destroy life?

  • wow... this guys the bomb. lmao. stupid joke, but i had to do it ha haa

  • this guy miss's the point a terrsiost organisation would build the bomb they would buy one

  • ashamed of course and you should care

  • simply and complete

  • Verdassan - you should read more about the history of the bomb.

Oppenheimer and Lawrence both came from Berkeley, Lawrence built his first cyclotron there.

Berkeley, Princeton, and University of Chicago are probably are the three main schools that contributed brains to making the bomb happen.
