Lots of farb .. blah ... and would people please take the time to read a little about history. The guy using the "states rights" argument really has it all wrong. Read the Confederate Constitution. Read the various states articles of secession. It is right there folks - slavery!!! Yes; slavery!!
If you want to argue that the INDIVIDUAL soldiers fought for many reasons other than slavery - OK - fair enough. But individuals do not make war; political institutions do so get over it!
My interest in history started with my grandmother's stories as a child. My interest in the Civil war began a few years ago with learning local history and taking a class at our university that was taught by a teacher that opened my eyes. This video did much to inspire me into becoming a civil war re enactor. That and having some camping experience with another organization ( SCA) as well as a love of history and longing to teach it to others.
People like that guy depicting the colonel do need to stop making it sound like there's another one of these wars just on the horizon. I say that because they could happen anywhere and at virtually anytime, simply depending on the state of the economy and or social issues that may arise.
I'm a reb. All my life since I was a drummer boy at the age of 8 I have been with the Confeds. But that isnt along time considering I'm only 16. =). I usually am at Gettysburg. Every reenactor needs to go to Gettysburg in 2013! That is going to be epic. The 150th anniversery of Gettysburg!
It must cost a fortune to outfit yourself in correct period uniform, kit and arms. Good for you men and women who keep this history alive. I'm Canadian and have been interested in Civil War history all my life. I've read that perhaps 50,000 Canadians served. Mostly for the money offered to join the Union, apparrently about $200.
It's sad some joe public might wander into a reenactment and meet some of the people in today's reenacting community, especially those in the Civil War. I started out as a farb like we all do, but now I strive every event to better myself and those around me in a friendly way. Too many unrecontructed "reb-federates" refuse to adopt historical accuracy because doing so might actually mean concentrating less on their skewed modern-day political slant than to actual history.
but one thing i hate is when you aim your gun at a yank and pull the trigger and they dont take a hit they just stand there and look at you thats wat i just hate
