After the cutscene ends, get a Rage of the Titans upgrade, and the strength to do battle with the Kraken. Use the corpse on the switch under the tentacle on the left to soar up and hit him in the face. Once you sever both of his tentacles, knock him down and put an end to him. Take hold of the Phoenix and enter the Palace of the Fates. Break the face to proceed further into the palace.

yes, it is necessary. he doesnt come down low enough and he isn't stunned when you do that.
