First train seen was caught merely by chance. This was the Derby Special that RJ Corman was running out of Lexington. The former Southern FP7's are seen here crossing over a street towing the My Old Kentucky Dinner Train consist, as well as cars from BNSF & CN. A failed attempt was made to chase this train.

Amtrak's Derby Special was parked at Louisville Union Station, where the Kentucky Cardinal used to stop. The consist lined up P42DC no. 114 and P40DC 832, recently rebuilt at Beech Grove. The Private Varnish ranged from the Georgia 300, which ferried President Obama to Washington last year, a dome and lounge car from Northern Sky Charters, and a sleeper and a dome observation car from Creative Charters. This train was on display until 6PM that night, when it headed north to meet the Hoosier State in Indianapolis.

Pardon some of the shaky shots and hurried panning, for we were in fast-foward mode to get these shots and then head to Cincinatti to visit Union Station and Entertrainment Junction before having my hearing blasted away by Bigelf and Porcupine Tree.

  • How could one acquire tickets for the Derby Special?

  • @MarkConductor775 Short answer, you don't.

Long answer, you work in railroad management.

  • They usually do something like that through a charter firm...you may want to double-check that there statement.

  • @MarkConductor775 Okay, let me rephrase that. You need to have roots with the owner(s) of the railroad to ride this train.

  • Or be deeply rooted in our "good ole boy" Kentucky government. Money talks!

  • Yoy were at Entertrainemnt Junction?! I went there back when it first opened, and thought it was just... ok. What'd you think of it?

  • Great filming.

  • Corman's QJ pulled a Railpower Genset and those ex Southern F's part of the way to the Derby, I'm still kicking myself in the rear for that, bu weather wasn't on my side.
