The Volkl Mantra 2012 Freeride ski is reviewed by Darren Turner, presenter of the Ski School Apps and ski instructor in Bormio, Italy, during the 2011 SIGB ski test.

The Volkl Mantra has been around for a while as a brand, but, we are told by Dave Sawyer-Parker of Volkl UK it is always evolving.

The ski has a rocker and Darren skied it hard through crud, windpack, powder and on piste and found it to be really versatile.

The ski tested was 177cm and at that length the Volkl Mantra's dimensions are 133-96-166 (giving a 20.3m turn radius).

Check out the Ski School Apps to improve your skiing technique and rip the mountain better in all snow conditions!

  • Yeah, looks like it needs speed for wide carves. Up top he wasn't really carving, more just skidding. There is blatently a compromise in a ski this chunky. Furthermore is float in powder really that great, getting some sink is fun and looks better too.

  • @atraherne When I skied it it definitely did need some speed and space to do some long carvs but there was a lot of grip it's a very versatile ski and good fun.

  • where is the RTM 80 video? Great videos, thanks

  • @blazing928 Unfortunately we didn't do a review for the RTM 80 but I ski quite alot on the RTM 84 which is a really good ski, definitely the RTM range are all great skis, slightly more piste orientated than the Mantra.

  • would these be too advanced of a ski for an intermediate looking to up his game a bit?

  • @waawaabaa alltheplants is right. They are a great ski but they are pretty solid and you'll need the strength and technique to work them properly to get the most out of them. Thanks for stepping in alltheplants!

  • The ski is great by I like the Volkl red Jacket.

  • @olof07 agreed Olof. It's the first year that we've done ski reviews so if we do them again this year we'll take comments like yours on board.

  • very nice vid i must say.., maybe a little bit more feedback would be nice.

Who are these skiis for? Who are they not for? What's there advantage/disadvantage? - you know.. otherwise loved it

  • @alltheplants I spend most of the year running quite a bit and I tend to learn things pretty quickly so i guess i will take it into consideration

    Thanks for the reply

  • This ski is a bit much for a true intermediate. It needs some speed to perform on the groomers and would feel like too much ski in most conditions imo. If you are athletic and have an accelerated learning curve please disregard my comment.
