A square knot also works when you apply a Tourniquet to control arterial bleeding in first aid.

@csplendrig well it's traditionally used for reefing, hence reef knot. I guess in non sailing uses people use it for making jewellery, In terms of joining two lengths of rope together and putting strain on it as a whole rope this isn't the best, as it can come undone.
