Bert Weedon often seems to 'inspire' (???) derisory comments, and yet a huge number of today's greatest guitarists acknowledge that it was him and/or his 'Play in a Day' tutor which started them on the road to their current status as guitar heroes and players of enormous skill --- This little movie uses one of his lesser known recordings as an example of how well he could handle one of the trickiest instruments: the acoustic 12 string guitar. (A Harmony 12, in case you wondered). It therefore goes without saying that those people who post negative or belittling messages about Bert, actually haven't the faintest idea what they're on about ... and they certainly know absolutely nothing about the history of modern guitar playing.

----- PS -----

Amazing that this little movie has got so many hits in such a short time ... long live Bert!

  • Amazing piece! Do you have sheet music for that / any idea where I can buy it? I'd love to have it!

  • @moydodir79 I bought the sheet music when the record was released. The music for the flip side (Color him folky) was also published in a book of12-string instrumentals.

  • @AlanSturgess

Any way to get that now? What's the name of the notebook with the sheet music?

    Thanks

  • @moydodir79 I doubt if '12 string shuffle' was published for very long. As I said, I bought my copy when the single was released and because I played 12 string. I've never seen the sheet music again - but there are sure to be copies out there somewhere owned by people like myself who still have it. The track is still available of a couple of Bert compilation CD's. As for 'Color him folky' - that is in a small book of transcriptions called 'The Big 12 String Guitar'. That can be found 2nd hand.

  • @moydodir79 In case you want to experiment for yourself, the key chords at the start are A7 A6 and Emaj with a run across the fretboard to get from the A's to the E.

  • 12 strings are a bear for me to get used to, but they're hella fun to play. I'm gonna have to learn this.

  • @CyValkarion My first '12' was a brute, but that was back in the 1960's. There wasn't much choice and instruments weren't as well developed nor as easily available as they are now. My most recent '12' wasn't overly expensive but was fantastic to play with a very low action and a good sound. I had to sell it after damaging my left hand which makes guitar playing difficult anyway - and 12-string playing not really feasible. The opening riff of Bert's recording is based on alternating A7 and A6.

Heck I remember Bert on Children Hour TV in the middle 1950s giving lessons. That's how I got started with Bert and his long song playing is second to no one - the best love song guitarist ever. He made the guitar sing as they say. Yet, I copy his style - he;s my find of guitar player.
