Highlights from the October 26, 1989 game between Hawaii and BYU at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. BYU was a ranked team and featured future Heisman winner Ty Detmer at QB. Hawaii had lost every encounter with BYU since joining the WAC, often in heartbreaking fashion, and was coming off a disappointing loss against Colorado State. And yet sometimes the stars do seem to align, and for that moment at least, magic occurs.

What is with the red dots on the left side of BYU's helmets? It seems sort of inappropriate to wear something that makes your helmet look like the Japanese flag, especially in Hawaii. Is it out of line? What does it mean? I would like to hear why BYU chose to wear that.

Because my beautiful, but impressionable wife asked LaVell Edwards to show support for a national anti-drug campaign that BYU student government supported. It was called Red-ribbon week. The funny thing is they weren't even supposed to wear them until their home game the following week. But, after this crushing loss, they didn't even wear them during the actual National Drug Awareness week.

I was 6 years old watching this game. My family's season tickets were the second to the top row in the yellow section. And i still had to stand up to see the action. Thats when the stadium was truely packed. I watched this game so much on betamax i memorized every line from jim leahey's play by play. Gotta love the old rivalry.

Big mahalos for posting this video...Those were the days, the rivalry was intense, the crowds came out in droves, they were on fire and were fanatics...Jim Leahy commentary was just awesome, he made the game more exciting, hes alittle bit reserved nowadays, but neways this is what UH needs right now...a true worthy rivalry that'll bring back the excitement to the good ol Rust Bucket NoAloha...also LOL @ the newspaper on the field...wat a tradition..
