"Nick!"
Silence.
"Nick where are you?"
Liz shone her flashlight across the lake. She could see her vacation home in the distance and everything else was unfamiliar. She sighed and sat down next to Kevin who was gently rowing the boat with Joe.
Mandy was on her phone calling Nick's cell phone for the hundredth time. She hung up and asked, "Who the hell runs away and talks on the phone for four hours?" All I've head is 'Beep...beep...beep'! It's ridiculous!"
Kristy just sat at the front of the boat, fiddling with her hair.
"This is crazy. Nick could be anywhere by now! For all we know he drowned!" Joe exclaimed, throwing his paddle into the boat and crossing his arms.
"Joe don't say that!" Kevin snapped, setting down his oar as well.
Kristy stood up and pointed in the distance asking, "You guys look! Isn't that our boat?"
Everyone squinted and looked. Sure enough on the opposite shore sat the boat, upside down in the sand.
"Oh my God it is! Paddle!" Mandy exclaimed.
Joe and Kevin paddled as fast as they could.
Five minutes later Kristy jumped out of the boat and ran onto shore. "Nick!" she screamed, worried. There was no reply.
Joe sat down on the upturned fishing boat.
Suddenly a moan came from under the boat. Joe jumped and stared at the boat in disbelief. "Nick?" he asked.
Another moan sounded. Joe yelped and shouted, "Guys he's under here!"
Together the five lifted the boat and moved it away. Nick appeared lying on the sand. His cell phone was open in his hand and they could hear a girl crying and screaming, "Nick don't do this!" A half empty bottle of sleeping pills was in his other hand.
Kristy dropped down onto her knees next to Nick and picked up his cell phone, pressing it to her ear. "Hello?"
"Nick?" asked the girl on the line.
"No this is an old friend of Nicks. Who is this?" Kristy asked.
"Selena Gomez. Please help him! He called me and told me he was gonna kill himself! I tried to convince him to stop but...but..." she stopped and began crying even harder.
"Don't worry. I'll make sure he's okay." Kristy said, taking Nick's hand in hers.
Selena took a shaky breath and said, "Thank you" Then she hung up.
Kristy shut Nick's phone and Joe and Kevin picked up Nick and gently set him into their boat. Then they grabbed the other one and set it into the water.
Joe and Kevin told the three girls to take one boat and they would take Nick.
The six set off, Joe, Kevin, and Nick were back at the house in less then ten minutes and the girls were still about three minutes away. Liz stopped paddling and asked, "Is Selena Nick's old gf?"
"Keep paddling!" Mandy snapped, "And yeah. She is."
"Ouch." Liz said, glancing back at Kristy who just sat there, staring at her hands.
It was silent for a moment and then Kristy asked shakily, "Why would he do this?"
Mandy sighed, "No one knows why people do stuff like this Kristy."
"No, I mean why would he do this over her?"
"What do ya mean Kris?" asked Liz.
"Well..." Kristy began slowly, "he tried to kill himself because of Selena."
"Maybe he's still in love with her."
Mandy gasped and nudged Liz who yelped and then said, "Well it's a possibility!"
Mandy sighed and reassured Kristy, "It's not because of that. I promise you."
The rest of the ride was silent.
Four hours later Joe, Kevin, Kristy, Liz, and Mandy were sitting around Nick.
Mandy could tell that Kristy wanted to be alone with Nick so she turned to Liz and said, "Well I'm hungry. Let's go get some grub!"
Joe looked up, "Food?"
Liz asked, "Why would we..."
Mandy ignored her and grabbed Kevin and Liz by the shirt collars and Joe followed as she dragged them out of the room.
Kristy turned to Nick and sighed. She wondered if he could hear her in his sleep. Kristy reached out and intertwined her fingers with his. She took a deep breath and then whispered, "Nick...I...I love you."
"I know."
Nick opened his eyes a bit and looked up at Kristy. He squeezed her hand and then closed his eyes again and passed out.
Kristy's eyes filled with tears and she put her head on Nick's chest, sobbing.
"What happened?" asked Joe, shoving a handful of chips into his mouth. Kevin, Liz, and Mandy turned and stared at him. "What?" Joe shoved another fistful of chips into his already full mouth.
Suddenly Kristy opened the bedroom door and looked around for a second before looking down and walking into her room. She shut her door gently and Mandy could hear her crying.
The front door opened and Mandy slapped her forehead asking, "What are we gonna tell the parents?" The four looked towards the stairs where they could hear laughing.
