which is strongest? all depends on the engineer. in real life, we use a combination of them. personally i like base isolation and k or x bracing... but it all comes down to how it calculates out when the building is modeled in an earthquake scenario. But remember - all engineers have to assume some maximum of lateral forces when calculating this.. at some point mother nature may deliver something that is outside of the assumptions, and then all bets are off!

engineers typically use a combination of these methods to come up with their resistance plan along with other forms of the building like a tube shape structure where the building's resistance is at its perimeter. then each earthquake is different - so you must consider vertical "punch", and then lateral forces at varying frequencies. hope this all makes sense! -h
