Tampa hosted the Opening Ceremonies for 10th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championship. The 2011 World Championship took place Aug. 1-7, 2011 on the Seddon Channel in Downtown Tampa. The Seddon Channel has been used for many rowing regattas in the years past, including the prestigious University of Tampa President's Cup. The Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute has been running an annual dragon boat race in Downtown Tampa since 2004. They have created one of the most successful dragon boat cities in North America in just a few short years. All proceeds from the annual event are donated to two charities -- The Florida Aquarium and FACTors Breast Cancer Patient Support Program at Moffitt.
The Opening Ceremony took place on August 2, 2011. 4,000 athletes from across the globe, donning their nations colors, paraded into Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park where they were officially welcomed by the City of Tampa and the International Dragon Boat Federation. Local celebrity Jack Harris served as emcee for the event. This video was first run on City of Tampa Television. The producer was Karey Poulos.
