St. Vrain Valley Credit Union Financial Literacy for our Future

St. Vrain Valley Credit Union supports both the St. Vrain Valley School District and the community with a variety of financial literacy programs, as well as maintains a student-run credit union branch at Skyline High School. To champion these efforts, St. Vrain Valley Credit Union provides FoolProof and NEFE materials to schools free of charge.

Classroom and community presentations range from the history of money, the value of savings, and using checking and debit/credit cards responsibly, to an overview of basic money management strategies. Information on car loans is quite popular at the high schools and recently the important topic of Identity Theft Protection has been added. Participants readily grasp the need to take preventative steps to avoid being the victim of fraud. All of the presentations combine lecture with interactive question and answer sessions, and a variety of activities.

St. Vrain Valley Credit Union worked with the St. Vrain Valley School District throughout 2007 to implement the Financial Literacy Graduation Credit program. The St. Vrain Valley School District Board of Education now requires all freshman to take and complete a financial literacy class before graduation. In 2008, St. Vrain Valley Credit Union conducted 19 classroom presentations and reached 428 students. In addition, the Credit Union opened 270 youth accounts in 2008.

St. Vrain Valley Credit Union provides financial education to members and through its partnerships with the St. Vrain Valley School District, City of Longmont Recreation Department and the Times-Call newspaper.
