  • I've got an old Norelco stereo tape recorder where I can do sound-on-sound recording, bouncing from left to right, eventually making a mono master. It's a little easier than what Les and Mary had to do back then, but it's still very difficult, especially at half speed (which Les did very often).

  • Sometimes i think doing multi-track recording like this would be a good discipline in and of itself - he had to get it in one take or start over from scratch. You'd have to learn to get everything in one take - technology is very comfortable now in that you can chop up everything and delete, re-record just certain bits...but...knowing that once that tape started you had to get it right the first time, well..that's a difficult thing to master...

  • @katiebridget i will have to say it is sooo true there will be no other like this

  • I don't know exactly what he used back in the 50's...I think it was some old Gibson amp. In his later years he ran straight through a PA system and could get the same sound thanks to his Low Impedance pickup equipped LP's.

  • I agree =p what amp did he use? his tone is very rich.

  • The amazing thing with Les Paul is the amazing tone he gets is usually from pickups he made himself! He didn't use the normal P-90 pickups fitted in those days, if you look closely at his guitar you can see that it mounts differently. Then later on he was using the Low Impedance LP recording model...one of the least popular, but in my opinion the best ever Les Paul Gibson ever made!

  • Rest In Peace...
