More adventures of the longest running version of the Tom Grant Band, with this entry coming from the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival in Portland, OR., under the St.Johns Bridge by the Willamette River. BTW...opening titles are NOT mine...they are the original cable access titles, complete with homespun misspells and such. :P
This version of Pat Martino's "On The Stairs" is typical of the band's depth and breadth on tunes such as this.
This band could go from the Smooth Jazz sound of the day, to playing the most stone BeBop at the drop of a hat.
That being said, it's good to be able to hear two master improvisers (with great support), in their home element (in front of an audience that knows their playing well), playing wide-open and full-on mainstream Jazz music, with modern verve to it.
techincal note:
The high-pitched whine that you hear is not your stereo imploding... alas it is the degrading of the VHS tape that I pulled that performance from. I would love a better copy, but sometimes you fight the fight with what is brought to you. My thinking is that this document should be seen to furher illustrate the wonderful musicians that grace the Portland, Oregon area, and this band, in general. The sonic imperfections fall short when compared to the historical importance of the event/performance.
I invite your comments here at YouTube.
thanks,
Tom Grant on piano, Dan Balmer on guitar, Jeff Leonard on bass, and Carlton Jackson on drums.
