Materials include a few feet of magnet wire AWG 23, one ceramic disk magnet, two safety pins, one AA battery holder, one wood block and 2 small screws to hold the safety pins. I think a step by step instruction for this is available at MiniScience. They also sell a kit for that, but you don't have to buy a kit if you can find the materials locally.

what gauge copper wire did you use?

I used wire gauge 23. If the wire gauge is higher (or the wire is thinner), then you must use a smaller loop and shorter extensions.
