German Shepherd leads trooper to explosion site, injured owner

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska State Troopers are presenting a special award to Buddy, a German Shepherd that led authorities to a fire at his owners' property near Willow.

Buddy will receive the engraved silver-plated dog bowl Friday afternoon in Anchorage.

Troopers say Buddy and his owner, 23-year-old Ben Heinrichs, were in the family workshop on the Caswell Lakes property April 4 when a heater ignited chemicals
.

Heinrichs, who sustained minor flash burns on his face, dashed out as the fire grew. He then told Buddy "we need to get help."

The dog took off and eventually found a trooper responding to a call about the fire. Buddy led the officer through winding back roads to the house and the trooper guided firefighters to the scene.

The workshop was destroyed, but only some window trim on the house was damaged.

Anyone who thinks this dog was just trying to get away from cop...Is just an insult to this amazing dog....When the cop first sees the dog they were both approaching intersection from opposite directions..You can clearly see dog barking urging him to turn..And when he seen cop and him were on same page.. Buddy took off really fast and kept looking back...And you can clearly see dog stop in the driveway..If he thought he was being chased hes not gonna stop both dog and cop true heros!!!

@gnomex11 I want to protect my home, not kill. I can always call my dog back but I can't take that bullet back. My dog is my companion, but I also have the benefit of her protection as well. Besides, some landlords don't allow you to have firearms or weapons in your home. (Like mine) I'm not saying chihuahuas are bad breed. I just prefer German Shepherds.

I just saw part of this story on Discovery Channel. After getting the trooper, Buddy ran off to GET FIREFIGHTERS!!! The firefighters were just as stunned that Buddy appeared out of nowhere and got them and even more that the trooper had pretty much the same story.

What this video fails to mention that is very important is that after he led the police to the house he went back to the same intersection and repeated his actions to lead the fire department to the house.

I have a new 14 week GSD and she's the best! So intelligent and protective of me already. When I take her to the park she places herself between me and approaching strangers and is always on the alert. So eager to please too. I owned a boxer and also a Boston terrier that took so much longer to train. It almost seems like my GSD was born trained...;)
