Abandoned pedestrian passageway in the New York City Transit System. I can pretty well guarantee that this is the only video in existence of this facility, which was unknown to most New Yorkers even when it was open. It was a critical link in an underground netowrk that allowed direct access from Grand Central to Penn Station. The other major piece was the Gimbel's passage under the 32nd or 33rd Street, from 6th to 7th Avenues which closed in the 1980s.

  • Aren't they re-opening one of these passageways at 34th Street / Penn Station soon?

  • A proposed office tower would offer a new passageway from 6th to 7th, if it is ever built.

  • Wow, this passageway really was as creepy as I heard it was. Appeared to still have its original incandescent lights from 1940, which for a unstaffed passageway of that length made it a haven for crime. The rape of a woman that led to the closure of this and other lightly-used tunnels occured in March 1991 according to the NYT...and it wasn't even the first one that occure

d in there. Yikes. Great video, always wondered about this tunnel.....this had to have been taken before Spring '91, right?

  • @SuperAdventures sure dude

  • Wow so this passageway was closed because someone was attacked. Pretty historic video.

  • There must have been other crimes committed there over the years too, however, by closing the passage the TA spared itself the expense of upgrading lighting and performing other necessary maintenance.
