SR is proud to be the country's first nonprofit musical organization dedicated to helping those who live in less fortunate circumstances, especially children (e.g., homelessness, runaways, domestic violence, drug/alcohol abuse, etc.) We currently have over 300 members from Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Wisconsin, Missouri, South Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Colorado, Tennessee and Utah! Sheltered Reality (SR) firmly believes that all people, especially young people, must learn how to help those who are in need, no matter what problems they may be facing. Helping others is a difficult task; not only does one need to know what to do and where to turn, but often, in our society, youth encounter peers who believe that reaching out and helping others is "not cool". To us, Music with Meaning is the way to disprove this myth. Through our shows we teach young and old alike that learning about social problems and how to address them is not only something we must do, but that it can also be fun...and in the case of SR, fun does mean very cool!! We know our method is successful because our fans, who now number in the tens of thousands, and who range in age from 3 to 104 years old tell us it works at every show we give (and we certainly give a lot of them!!). Music with Meaning is our way of helping young people find ways to change the communities, and hence the world, in which they live. Sheltered Reality (SR) has been using the words "Take A Chance" for almost three years now; these words are meant to help all of our audience members, especially young people, realize that in order to make a difference in the lives of others, in their communities, and in the world, they need only be willing to "Take A Chance"...to try something new...no matter how big or small, since every positive difference made in the life of another person is equally important. For young people, "taking a chance" should be second nature. Being young is all about "taking chances", but for so many young people, these chances are often negative or harmful; SR wants to change this by showing that there are chances that can be taken that are filled with nothing but goodness; for the person taking the chance in terms of building self-esteem, self-confidence, and the realization that you can truly change the world, and for the person who benefits from the chance-taking in terms of being helped through whatever problems they are facing in their lives.
