Cincinnati Police are investigating a dog attack in Pleasant Ridge. Police say a woman was walking her pit bull when she slipped and scared the dog, which then attacked her.

Crews were called to the 5900 block of Woodmont Avenue around 11:45 a.m. Joyce Mitchell, who also lives on the street, was walking her dog when she slipped on the ice. The fall apparently spooked the dog, which turned and attacked Mitchell.

Neighbors rushed out of their homes with hammers and shovels to beat the dog off Mitchell. Mitchell tried to secure the dog to a phone poll but she was unable. A police officer eventually gained control of the dog.

Billy Rogers is one of the neighbors: "And I looked around looked in the car got a hammer and came down here to help her, that's all I could do was try to get the dog off of her...looked like the dog was too vicious, and some other neighbors came and tried to help too...we got shovels and tried to get the dog away from her...but he was still attacking, then the other polices came and damn..."

Nieko Payne grabbed a shovel. "When I came out she had the dog wrapped around the pole and the dog started unwrapping itself and coming after her again and I hit the dog in the face and the police grabbed the leash and he wrapped it around the tree to keep the dog until the ambulance got here but... It had a big piece of her."

The SPCA has custody of the dog. Mitchell suffered injuries to her hands and legs.

  • @jcar7574 If you care to do any research, an infant boy was just killed this past Wednesday by the family Siberian Husky in Alberta, Canada

  • @sjlykowski I'm tired of people not doing their research and buying into media hysteria! While it IS true that APBTs do show a higher level of animal aggression, HUMAN aggression is an entirely seperate issue entirely and indicates POOR TEMPERAMENT! Any APBT that is human aggressive IS NOT representative of the breed and should be humanely euthanzied, ESPECIALLY if the aggression is FEAR based, which in this case, it appears it was.

  • This is a case of a very, very bad temperament. Any dog can have a bad temperament, its unfortunately running rampant now in this breed because its a "fad" breed and idiot breeders are out there breeding for looks with no regard for temperament, which is genetic in a large part. That dog doesn't even look like a pit to me. Looks more American Bulldogish.

  • i thought the same as you nonamejoe56 until i saw a video earlier, a pit bull which what seemed like having a good proper owner attacked a lady on the front lawn for no Arpanet reason

  • @dannyriv79 lets see when was the last time you saw german sheppard, rotweilers, akitas, mastifs, doberman,or bull dog attacking or killing a person .its always this bully breed called pit bulls

  • @jcar7574 Yes I agree, mine left a scar on my dads face.

  • It's the stupid owners fault, how a dog turns out is all because of the owner

  • its all black people and none of them have a gun.... just a hammer and a shovel phahaha

  • vicious breeds then should include, german sheppards, rotweilers, akitas, mastifs, dobermans, bull dogs... point is a pit bull is a powerfull dog and is not for everyone. just like every other breed should be researched so these incidents wont happen cause all its doing is giving more ammo to those people who hate the breed without giving it a legit chance.

  • when is this stupid country gonna ban this worthless breed, how many more attacks before this idiots exterminate this bully breed
