I think a lot of people are missing the point of this song - it's about the first gen of rockers, who rocked out to the movie "Blackboard Jungle" and thought Elvis was still king, the pre-Beatles crowd. And, in the middle verse, when they say his friends are doing time, they mean they are just running in place, they've sold out their bad boy rocker roots and have become respectable and dull. So the old greaser is taking his leave, even though you are never too old to rock and roll.
