It's October 16, 1492. The ships are still in the bay at San Salvador. Columbus and his men are searching for gold.

One of the Taino natives has become your friend. Her name is Tatpan, and she's your age. Tatpan has a pet parrot named Kinkin. The parrot likes to sit on your shoulder while you feed it bits of sea biscuit.

Tatpan takes you around her village. You eat native food like sweet potatoes and corn and watch the Indians make ropes from cotton plants. They weave these into comfortable hammocks. The sailors have never seen hammocks before. They find them great to sleep in--better than hard ground or a ship's deck.

Everyone likes this island, but Columbus is restless. The only gold he's found is in the trinkets of the natives. Where do all these rings and bracelets come from? Where are the gold mines?

The Tainos tell Columbus of a bigger island to the south--a place they call Colba. They say there may be gold mines there.

While the explorers talk this over, you go for a walk with Tatpan. Together you hike deep into the jungle. When you get hungry, you pick some tropical fruit. Tatpan also digs up sweet potatoes, which you roast over a small fire. Feeling thirsty, you spy a tall coconut tree.

"Let's have coconut milk!" you say to your friend, and begin shinnying up the tree. At the top, you reach over to get a coconut. Then you glance toward the sea and almost lose your grip.

The Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria are sailing away! The ships are leaving without you!

Scrambling down the tree, you grab Tatpan's arm and star running for the village. On the way, you try to think.

Part of you wants to be on your ship. Part of you wants to stay here awhile with the Tainos. Maybe these people can help you solve the mystery of the Santa Maria. You know there's another island in the area, where Fort Navidad was built. You know it was made from the wood of the Santa Maria and that there was a big battle. But how did it all happen?
