Ramp meter benefits
To understand the benefits of ramp meters, think about what happens when you merge onto an already crowded freeway. Many cars try to enter and merge at once. Drivers on the freeway are forced to slow down to let cars enter from the ramp, resulting in sudden speed changes, backups and accidents.
Ramp meters are in use in more than 20 cities and 12 states. They have reduced rear-end collisions and sideswipe collisions by more than 30 percent in some cities.
With ramp meters, each driver will wait slightly longer to enter the freeway, but freeway traffic should be smoother and overall speed should increase. Most travelers should experience an overall reduction in travel time.
ramp meters make it safer, are you all on drugs? What genius came up with this idea. Maybe in Canada, but I dare you to come to Atlanta, GA (usa) and say that. It doesn't help at all. The only thing it does is back up side streets causing traffic on side roads waiting to get onto the highway. And at no point should you have to stop to enter the freeway. The point of the on ramp is to build up speed to merge with the other maniacs doing 80+ mph. I personally ignore all ramp meters/lights.

We ramp meters in Canada (mainly in Ontario along the QEW in Mississauga). They only work in rush hour when traffic is heaviest.

Ramp metering spreads out the cars entering the freeway making merging safer. It also limits the number of cars on the freeway to keep the flow moving.
