The lyrics to Children's Crusade by Sting on Dream of the Blue Turtles.
This is what Sting had to say in his lyrics book:
"This is one of my more ambitious songs. I tried to combine an abiding interest in the First World War, heroin addiction in contemporary London, and the abuse of twelfth-century street children, who were sold into slavery in a cynical pseudoreligious scam that was appalling even by the low moral standards of the Crusaders and the ethics of the time. There seemed to be a connection" (Sting 106).

  • It truly is a beautiful song... especially if you think about the history/meanings behind it...

  • Sting has to be one of the artist's of all time. His music is timeless. If this man hasn't touched your heart, then nothing ever will !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "cynical pseudoreligious scam that was appalling even by the low moral standards of the Crusaders and the ethics of the time" - this really grinds my gears. Obviously Sting is basing his view of the Crusades on popularised Victorian myths that the Children's Crusade was in fact some sort of hegemonical slave trade. "Children" here was a metaphor for the devotional laymen; the "crucesignati". READ ANY CRUSADER HISTORIAN WHO IS WORTH HIS SALT...

  • Beautiful .Thank you.

  • What a terribly sad yet beautifully done song. I remember being betrayed by a friend, and then listening to this song because I knew it would release the tears.

    It worked.

  • And it also says "all of those young lives betrayed" because there was so much propaganda and misconsqued ideas about the war that nearly all the men joined; it was considered cowardly and disloyal if you didn't. Everyone honestly believed that they'd be back by Christmas....but in the end, I think only 1/3 of the men SURVIVED, and 2/3 of the survivors were injured and mutilated. Overall, it was a cruel war unlike any that had occured previously :P

  • My history teacher explained to me that it discusses poppies not only for the rise in addiction after the war, but because they are a plant that flourish only when all other competition is destroyed. During the war, the land was destroyed, and so the poppies grew :(

  • Vonnegut penned the song name first

  • You spelled country wrong.

  • Saw Sting two times during the tour .

Genk in Belgium and Rotterdam in The Netherlands.

    Great song

  • This old dinosaur used to have TDotBT on cassette. Thanks.

  • Omar Hakim's stick work on this album is incredible!

To be honest, every musician on the release is world class!

I still play this in my daily rotation, and I can't see it leaving its place, anytime soon!
