the Sun by SHIN Jin Sik, 1991

[ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY] Jin Sik Shin was born in Seoul, Korea, 1960. Primarily known as a media artist, over the past twenty five years the work of Jin Sik Shin has included computer art, video art, performance, visual theater, painting, interactive installation, short film, documentary film and experimental television programs and SHIN's interest in new media began to surface in his twenties when he first edited and published The Street Paper, a periodical that may be one of the most significant avant-garde art journals in Korea. His focus on new media continued to evolve and since his solo show, "Computer Art Performance" at the French Cultural Center in 1985, SHIN's artistic and professional career has focused on computer technology as a medium of artistic expression. That exhibition was the first in Korea to focus on this new use of computers in the arts and further demonstrated that his interest was not simply to investigate the technology but rather to play with it. Also his solo show at the Battangol Museum in 1991 was the first interactive multi-media installation in Korea. In 1992, Shin successfully planned, produced, and curated the "Science + Art Show" exposition, commissioned by Korea Science Foundation and the "Seoul Computer Art Festival", commissioned by EXPO and Korean Broadcasting System. The following year the moved to New York city. In 1994, SHIN was invited to participate in the "SeOUL NymAX" at the Anthology Film Archives in New York City with renewed artists Nam Jun Paik and in the "Video Circle 2000" in Hong Kong. In 1993 and as an extension of his art he founded Mantra TV, which has broadcast on Manhattan Neighborhood Network since 1998. Among his numerous accomplishments, Shin won the MNN Award in 2000 as Best Producer of the Year for the TV program he produced in New York to promote public interest in art and music. SHIN's career has cast him in the various roles of artist, author, director, producer, and teacher. He is currently a professor at Konkuk University in Korea. SHIN was the curator of "KUEIP 2007-2009", "FRESH 2007, 2009", "Ceiling Theatre", "Korea International Experimental Film Festival 2009" and the author of the best-selling book, "Computer Animation", published by Hankukmunyeon and "Art and Technology", published by Seoul Art Center. SHIN has produced many ground breaking programs, including "The Future Television", which won the Seoul Prize in 1995. SHIN's works have been represented internationally at UK, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Germany, Thailand, and USA. SHIN's works have been purchased by 110 Rockefeller Center, New York; Kim's Video, New York, Commonwealth Brewing Company, Boston; KMUTT, Bangkok; National Museum of Modern Art, in Korea as part of the collection.(written by Jung Hee Choi, 2009)
