At the end of a primetime news conference, mostly revolving around President Obama's health care reform bill, Chicago Sun-Times columnist Lynn Sweet asks him about race relations in America. He says that "the Cambridge police acted stupidly" in arresting Professor Henry Louis Gates in his own home, which he broke into after forgetting his keys. It is believed that both Obama as well as Gates suspect racial profiling in the arrest.

Obama also joked that he wouldn't break into his own current place of residence like Gates would, because, "Then I'd get shot."

  • The president is right

  • Obama acts stupidly every day.

  • @starvetodeath123 If they couldn't "conceive" the idea in the first place, they should've just shot him & asked for his ID afterwards, right? No, I know I'm twisting your words around, but it is just naive to think that just because this officer acted in a way that was following procedure, he's automatically a racist because he asked for the guy's ID after he showed up to the residence per a call from dispatch that the [professor himself] called in. He probably had a speech about racism handy.

  • @jimmyv113 Are you living in the clouds? Please! In the middle of a neighborhood like Cambrige, the cops couldn't concieve that a black person was living there rather than trying to break in. Don't pretend that racism is gone for good. In fact, your attempt to ignore that it exists only fuels it when it is actually there.

  • People complaining about others being racists; Racists themselves.

The professor quickly jumped the race card. If he would've just approached the officer and explained what happened, all of this would've been avoided. But no, he decided it was because he was black that the officer was arresting him. What's his profession again because it isn't logical understanding or understanding of the law.

The president backed up the professor because he didn't want to lose his already declining black vote
