[Please read] Hit the beach, have some barbecue, and enjoy a little song-and-dance by Debra and Hoagy Carmichael.

Anchored by a clip of Debra flirting, singing and dancing with uke-strumming Hoagy Carmichael (1899-1981)—the noted jazz musician and songwriter—this video also features a few other Paget appearances in the fun Fox film "Belles on Their Toes" (1952). A sequel to 1950's "Cheaper by the Dozen," the film follows once again the fortunes of the large Gilbreth family in Montclair, New Jersey. Widowed Gilbreth matriarch Lillian [matronly Myrna Loy—light years removed from her sparkling Nora Charles in the "Thin Man" films as well as earlier exotic roles like Fah Lo See in "The Mask of Fu Manchu" (1932)] presides over a brood of charismatic kids, some of whom are young adults like Ann (Jeanne Crain, reprising her "Dozen" role), Ernestine [pretty Barbara Bates, also onboard for the sequel and perhaps best remembered for her previous appearance as Phoebe in "All About Eve" (1950)], and Martha (rose-buddy Debra Paget). Also appearing are Jeffrey Hunter and Edward Arnold. The mood is predominantly light, nostalgic, and very "Booth Tarkington." [cf. Doris Day's "On Moonlight Bay" (1951)].

The few film clips featured in this one-shot video can now be enjoyed on DVD—complete and in the full context of the original motion picture in which they appeared—by referring to the BELLES ON THEIR TOES DVD distributed by Fox Home Entertainment. Please do not hesitate to go directly to the source www.foxhome.com or www.foxstudioclassics.co.uk for your copies or more information! This YouTube video creatively gives the public a brief and winning sample of une belle femme sur ses orteils dans un film amusant. I hope it will lead to greater interest in, enthusiasm for, and possibly even greater rentals and sales of this movie.

IMPORTANT: Questions or comments are sincerely welcome—but only if they are nice, clean, and comprehendible. If you are a professional and prefer that I delete this video, please contact me and it will promptly be done.

Side-note for the statistical: Debra Paget was Elvis Presley's first leading lady in films, co-starring with him in "Love Me Tender" (1956).

  • it's wierd, at the time i saw this movie, i didnt consider myself a paget fan, but i always remember this dance. it's been years since i saw and now that i have seen it again (thanks for that) i am even more impressed!

show really moved across the stage quick, light and bouncy but still very graceful. why did she do more musicals like this, and why was she typecasted as an exotic??? how many gorgeous, glamorous actress who could also dance? you could probably count them on one hand.

  • Yes, definitely a classic beauty. :)

  • an oldie, a classic??

    ..i love it..大好きです♥ !!

  • I would be interested to know where you pick up these rare movie clips of my little darling Debbie. The routine she did with ukelele-strumming Hoagy Carmichael was GGGGRRREAT!. She showed that she wasn't just the prettiest face you ever saw, but could sing & tap-dance more than a bit too!. Some of the still photos of her were wonderful. Another gem, northbreed1!.

  • She was Lilia, the Water girl from Ten Commandments. This was a good movie too though.

  • did she ever danced with fred..i think that would have been awesome!!she is just too pretty...

  • You wouldn't happen to know what the name of the song is, that the children are singing as they leave the beach do you? That's my favorite song from the movie. We used to have it on VHS, but I want to get it again on DVD. I just loved this movie growing up. If you know please let me know!

  • She was my first (TV)-love... Sooooo pretty! Thx for this vid.
