No, I don't think the computer would be me. Even if it were a perfect copy, it would still be a copy. It might not know it's a copy, but as soon as it was conscious, its experiences would not be mine...

@abc, Imagine that you had only ever experienced me through a computer--video/audio files, emails, and PM's--for all intents and purposes, I am not an organic life-form, but simply a collection of my previous body's preserved thoughts transmitted through a computer, an echo of my previous self. My consciousness, albeit a very very sexy, and thought-provoking inorganic consciousness is not alive as you begin to perceive it, do you think that you could fall in love with me?

I'm still agnostic about it, but atm i feel like: The sould could be real, It could very well be non-physical, and in need of a physical information device (brain). Just like you need a keyboard (your body) and a computer (the brain itself) to express yourself online, the sould could need the brain & body to accomplish something in the physical world. The soul could even come from a different dimension, one which we can not directly see. Any thoughts?

When we measure brain activity that predictably fires off during certain kinds of thoughts, instead of assuming that the brain activity IS the thought, the reducing valve theory would say that the activity is the measure of the brain allowing more consciousness to be experienced. The works equally well to explain brain damage. The brain's ability to open itself to consciousness is hindered, so it remains stuck in it's base state (to block consciousness).

Imagine that the brain acts as a sort of reducing valve that can allow more or less consciousness to be experienced. If the base state of the brain is to block consciousness, this would work as an alternative explanation.

I think it is possible that we're more than our brains, yes. Much of the evidence that we are our brains is based around causality. Damaging the brain will cause a noticeable change in the thought and memory. The implication is that the brain is the creator of consciousness, but the logical opposite (that the brain reduces and filters consciousness) fits just as easily.

I think the human mind is just something that is disabling your real 'soul' from being free. Right now I feel like I see this whole universe through the eyes of a human body. There is definitely something up with that. We have no idea about all the mysteries surrounding the universe we live in, the possibilities are un-imaginable. Everything is so mysterious... I think that NDE's are lies, because if they died and their 'soul' went off, how would their mind remember it?
