A short documentary by Aisha Chowdhry that focuses on male belly dancers and the difficulties and advantages they face in a female dominated arena. Here's her info on it!

"Belly dancing originated from the Middle East/North Africa. When most people think of belly dancing, they picture a female dancer. However, today there are several male 'oriental' dancers who are leaving quiet an impression on the audience. In this video interview, you will get to see two of them, Rachid is from The Netherlands, and Bagoas is from Maryland, USA.

Rachid first discovered dancing when he was just a young boy and today he tours the world, performing at various belly dancing shows. Bagoas has been involved with music since he was young and has taken up belly dancing as a profession in recent years.

But being a male belly dancer comes with its share of public criticism. See how Rachid and Bagaos feel before they perform on stage and what challenges they have to overcome to do what they love to do the most, belly dance!"

  • Uh... there was a time when male performers were necessary in certain male arenas where women were not allowed. Look into history. Employing males as substitutes for females (Chinese opera) goes way back.

  • @BreezesofConey There most certainly was =) I was by no means ignoring this part of history, but focusing on my own artform in the present.

Bagoas, I think that you are very talented and have so much to offer. Never give a shit what anyone else thinks about you and what you do that makes you happy. Because at the end of the day when you go to bed exhausted, you go to bed happy and whole inside as well as out. While the others that taunt you are miserable with themselves. XOXOX CoCo.

  • I love male bellydancers. Because it's not usual only man who REALLY love to this dance, are dancing in this style. They have some kind of expression I really love. I say, bellydance is for male AND female. I hope on of them (or both!) can join Bellydance Superstars one day.

  • My favorite belly dancer is a male. The way I see it, women who perform or compete in a male dominated sport, art or job have to be twice as good as their male counterparts to get half the respect, and the SAME is true for men performing in a female dominated form. It takes a LOT of work and skill for a male belly dancer to get respect from an audience, and while I know a few female dancers might not like it, I imagine most embrace a dancer of the opposite sex who has so much passion and grace.
