TEDxToronto is the official TEDx conference for Toronto, Canada.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, it brings together the city's foremost thought leaders, change makers and everyday people from each discipline and challenges them to deliver powerful, unforgettable and unique TEDxTalks.
The theme of the second annual conference was A Call to Action. A total of 300 spots were reserved for audience members, while thousands more across the country joined via satellite locations and live video stream.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

The incredible irony of this talk is that he does exactly what he criticizes the media of doing in point 3. He talks a lot about the problem but then doesn't give anyone any information about what they can actually do about it. Are there organizations working to change the 7 social institutions that he criticizes? If so, who are they? Where are they? How can people watching this get involved with them? What can individual people do to work to dismantle these barriers?

We also have to be careful whenever labeling external things as control to results, for reasons such as when we dismantle these specific things will not others come up and if others come up then we have to dismantle those except every time a new obstacle appears we will constantly still feel like its never ending, this would also lead to an inclination to keep bothering ourselves and leaving better pursuits to deal with these, but overall good message.

The analysis of the movie characters is not complete imho. I have thought about it before, and I think there's a point in mentioning that the movies is also about "you as a single individual can save the world". It is a very capitalist mindset, in that it delegates responsibility to the consumers rather than the producers. And what a responsibility, having to clean up this mess all the previous politicians have left behind.

I think that many individuals in today's society do have a sense of security re: "human nature needs." What we do lack is a sense of contribution that provides self-satisfaction. Although not emphasized as a basic human need, it is a very important complement. Thus, people do want to give back (arguably in order to fulfill a non-altruistic need). I think Meslin's point to lower the barrier of time and extra energy required to contribute would improve the quality of life within the society.
