By cutting the top third off a plastic 2 litre drinks bottle and pushing it back into the remainder of the bottle upside down, you have made an effective fish trap. I use this method all the time at Tyne Valley Aquatics. Herd the fish into it or leave it baited for spooky types of fish. Once the fish enters the trap it is caught and can be removed without disturbing the plants and tank decor. The one in the video has the narrow part of the bottle removed also. Using this method of capture reduces stress, and allows you to do something else if it is left baited (remember to check regularly).

  • hay i know this has nothing to do with the vid but i seem to keep having like a layer of bebris on the surface of my water and it happened when i had gravel and now i have changed to sand i still have it and when i like slap the water surface with my hand all this muck will fall down and float around my tank but it allways comes back and if i leave it alone it forms a thick layer of muck which then smells and looks like shit can u help

    THANX

  • Sounds like organic matter coming out of the sand. Some sands will produce this. If you lay a sheet of newspaper over the surface it should pick it up. May need to do it a few times to catch all the floating muck.

  • @pondguru thanx i will do this but i cant be the sand because the gravel produced this aswell

  • As long as it is removed, the source doesn't matter. Once it is gone it shouldn't come back.

  • I so totally love you for this! I need to catch 7 tiny tetras in a planted 55 gallon tank and I was NOT looking forward to it. Thanks!

  • No worries, thanks for appreciating.

  • this is genius. I bought a few danios for my mother's large aquarium for her birthday last year, and kept them in my aquarium until I could get them to hers. They were just awful to catch, little devils, and I felt so sorry for chasing them around and frightening them. Very elegant solution.

  • O.o that...is...THE...most...brilliant...idea i have ever seen. you my good sir are a genius

  • @pondguru soz for the late reply but ur method actualy worked but it did come back so i just left it and after 3 days it went but what i did is moved my filter to the other side of my tank and changed the flow

  • Wait wait wait... I think I'm stupid..

Ok, someone explain to me how this works... If you put on the other portion of the bottle back into it how do the fish get in the back of the bottle and trap them?

  • This is just brilliant!

Thanks for the up load! I have 5 month old baby platy fish and I've worried when I have to clean the tank! :) Now I got a way to take them out safely!

  • Thanks! Good idea!

  • @Blunper Have you tried to catch tiny fast fish in a large tank before. It's tricky and stressful for the fish. This is 100 times faster and less stressful.

    Heaps good idea!

  • @pondguru Seriously awesome idea i wish i know that ages ago! , i have a 1100 liter/300gallon tank and I HAD TO TAKE EVERYTHING OUT to catch 6 fish, I will try to find 10liter bottles or something similar to make something like you have. Need to catch fish soon again ,.. dmn babie cichlides every time!
