hi, i used shave and haircut plugin for maya
its a pretty easy plugin to use to get great results.
you might want to create a scalp for growing the hair from which is important and for the beard to deform with the facial expression i did a wrap deformer with the scalp and with the head
(Animation Menu > Create Deformers > Wrap)
