The Shamu Story (2-25-09) - Orkid

I recorded two clips of Orkid during The Shamu Story last month. In the first one, SeaWorld's training set up is described. It's comprised of five letters which stand for the kinds of sessions the trainers have with their animals:
H - Husbandry (the animals are trained to cooperate with veterinarians for medical exams)
E - Exercise (high-energy behaviors such as jumps and speed swims)
L - Learning (training sessions to enrich and test the orcas' mental skills)
P - Play (the whales are given toys and other enrichment objects to interact with)
R - Relationship (trainers and animals have one-on-one bonding time)
S - Shows (public presentations such as Believe)

These aspects of SeaWorld's training methods apply to all of their parks. The animals have to want to follow with what a trainer asks them to do. Whales like Orkid are very powerful and intelligent, and if they don't want to do something, they don't do it.

Why did they lower the water so much?

Wow! This is amazing thank you OF for uploading. Orkid is just an amazing whale, i love how seaworld is trying to use sound now for signals great idea!! Just a quick questions, Do you know why the water was at that level though?

No problem. :) I believe they've been using underwater tones for quite awhile now, I'm not sure why she'd said they were recently installed. I've heard them several times in past trips in SCU.

The water was lower because they were repainting the slideout and the right slideover, and needed the pain to stay dry (which they failed at by the end of the day).

SeaWorld San Diego is now doing this show, once a day Mon-Fri, in addition to Believe!

Orkid is such a beautiful whale. I love her and i want to go to SWC sooo badly to see her Kassy and Nakai!

Very nice video. I love shows like these when they give you the truth. I'm just sick of those people who think they are forced into doing the behaviors.

you are right OrkidForever... SW has been using tones for a long long time.... at least for the last 17 or 18 years... I just might upload my old video of the training tones... please note... it takes me a long time to convert my old videos...as I have to use a very slow computer with old software I have to transfer my old VHS tapes to digital...it is a pain... you have a awesome video by the way...I enjoyed it...smile.
