Since its inception in 1939, the Blue Note label has consistently produced some of the most iconic recordings in jazz history as well as spearheaded developments in graphic design, illustration, cover art, liner notes and many other aspects of producing records. The labels commitment to fostering their artists growth over time offered opportunities for bandleaders to explore their creative & artistic voices as well as groom sidemen into becoming session leaders themselves.

In celebration of Blue Notes 70th Anniversary, an impressive roster of some of todays most phenomenal jazz artists has been assembled for this exclusive tour and accompanying album in 2009.

The Blue Note 7 is a septet comprising pianist and current Blue Note recording artist Bill Charlap with trumpeter Nicholas Payton, tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, alto saxophonist/flutist Steve Wilson, guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash.

As part of the "Jammin' at the Gem" concert series presented by the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City, MO., the Blue Note 7 will be appearing at the Gem Theater in the Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District on Friday, February 20, 2009.

*Featuring commentary from Musical Director and acclaimed jazz pianist, Bill Charlap, this video offers an insight to the Blue Note 7 project.

For ticket prices and more information on the Kansas City performance, call 816-474-8463 or visit www.americanjazzmuseum.org.

  • Purchased the album. It seems very reserved and there is no risk taking as far as the solos go. I could have spent money better on buying 3-4 classic Blue Note albums instead of this super "safe" recording. Basically Blue Note gone Hollywood. Honest review.

  • A bit slick..

  • Saw this past weekend at Stephens Auditorium..hottest group I've seen in awhile

  • I saw them at ASU in Boone, NC 2/17. it was a great show. Lewis Nash was particularly amazing.

  • Saw them at the Napa Opera House last month, absolutely amazing concert...

  • bennet studios

  • I went to see them at the Boulder Theater this weekend. It was INCREDIBLE! Classy and experimental, live and true...

  • This sounds promising. Not an imitation of the classic BlueNote years(who could imitate Art Blakey,Monk,Horace Silver?),nor a remix project that would be outdated in a few months. A solid bunch of players who can both play in an ensemble and also create listenable solos. Hopefully, they will be in good spirits when I get to see them in Philly in April. Memo to Bruce Lunvall,CEO of Blue Note Records:maybe a video could be shot when the tour winds up in NYC a few days later at the BlueNote club.
