DUNCAN - The ink was still drying on their new union cards when employees at a seniors care home in Duncan were handed pink slips. More than 200 workers at Sunridge Place have been told they'll be out of work by the end of March only days after they became a part of the Hospital Employees Union.
The facility celebrated its one-year anniversary in June. Over the past few months a campaign to unionize has been underway. On Friday workers voted 72% to join the HEU. On Tuesday everyone, including management, was let go.
Sunridge Place executive director Annette Condon called the timing coincidental while HEU spokesperson Margi Blamey said it may be coincidental, but the optics are striking.
The HEU is planning to file an unfair labour practices complaint with the Labour Relations Board. Sunridge Place has 160 complex care beds and 50 assisted living beds.
