Making a Proportional Prop Pattern

How to make a cosplay prop (like a gunblade) that's the exact size and shape that you want.

Forgive the large amount of scrolling text. I figured it would be far less annoying then my trying to haltingly narrate this video verbally.

Thanks for the video. I sure there are many ways to 'Skin this cat' so to speak, but whatever way works for you is fine.

So which one should we use wood or insulation foam?

Whichever you're more comfortable with. (If you have power tools and the skills to use them, you can get away with wood. If not, you can use insulation foam coated with styrene plastic or tagboard.

There is a much simpler way to do this. Taking a ruler and your reference image determine how tall the picture of Squall (or whoever) is, and how long the desired prop is. Make them a fraction. THen you make a secomnd fraction with yor height in the same place as your subjects and a blank where the prop is. Then its beginners algebra to get teh factor of increase. once you have that number all you need to do is multiply all the dimensions by it and boom! All proportional to you.

I've thought about that method too. (HCC Cosplay actually has a pretty good tutorial on making proportional costumes with a mathematical formula and everything. ) I prefer the "counting palm-widths" method because it features less math (which is hella hard for me to do.)

Oh, and then there's always the chance that you might not be able to find out how tall the original character is so you CAN'T use the formula method. But if you can, it's a great tool for helping determine the true length of a prop.

Just a tip though, there is a much easier way to rotate an image so that it is "standing straight up" as you put it. Under the eyedropper tool in the tools sidebar (hold down the mouse on the eyedropper) you will see a tool called the 'measure tool, use it like the line tool along the line you want straight up and then rotate arbitrary, hit enter. For horizontal measurements, rotate arbitrary then rotate 90. It will make your life MUCH easier.

nice, but you used a picture of Squall from kingdom hearts, (I hate how they call him leon). Kingdom hearts is my favorite game, narrowly beating out FF VII and VIII, but the proportions are all wrong. look at sora's freakin feet!

I was watching this and was thinking I'd be able to use this...but...then you printed it out and I was like, "....that is amazing. Why didn't I think of that?" I didn't know how much this *would* help me until you came to that part and everything fell into place. xD

I'm going to go try it on the sword I'm making now~ ^^
