This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's great in every aspect. The story, the characters, the acting, the beautiful, stunning Oscar winning fotography (Winton C. Hoch) and so much more. Attention to the race at the beach scene, to the fight sequence and... A movie like this is what makes me dream and still love cinema. It doesn't matter if it is from the 1950's. It's intrinsic quality is timeless. And, of course, Maureen O'Hara was a beautiful woman.

The source of every Irish stereotype there ever was. We're not really like this.

There was only one character who could be construed as being fond of the drink' and the film is not meant to be taken as fact or how things are supposedly meant to be in relation to treatment of women. In fact John Wayne,s character avoids hitting anyone despite being a boxer. And like normal couples they had arguments.

And although the film was made in 1951,it was set in the 1920,s/30,s and rural Irish people did actually use donkeys or horses to pull carts and older women wore shawls& live in thatched or slate roof stone cottages and drink alcohol and go to mass etc

This film teaches you how to hit women, and portrays Ireland as a backward nation of alcoholics.

No actually Maureen O'Hara did not play demeaning roles. The only demeaning part is those few minutes in McClintock when GW "spanks" Katherine. So do you think the role of Esmeralda in the 1939 version of the "Hunchback of Notre Dame" was a demeaning role for her because I thought it was something special. Please elaborate.

When I said that the making of the film "The Quiet Man" meant a lot to her,it had a lot to do with the fact that she was back in her home country.Read her book titled "'Tis Herself" and you will see what I mean, though from what I read the director John Ford was demeaning to both Maureen and John Wayne as in general he was a very grumpy person.

Nowadays there are roles in films that are thousands of times more demeaning for women than Maureen O' Hara ever acted. For example women are required to do explicit sex scenes(and usually in 'modern' films, theres no love between the characters) and simulate being at the receiving end of explicit violence.Ok I got carried away here, but I am telling the truth,so you will have to elaborate what you mean by demeaning roles.

@tvrulesnation @tvrulesnation its only a film and anyone with a brain would realise that this isn,t how the Irish actually are.But the making of the film meant a lot to Maureen.
