some modern jazz musicians I really like are: Robert glasper trio(my favourite, check also his Robert Glasper Experiment!!), James Farm, Gretchen Parlato and many more you have to find yourself!

Older guys I dig Charles Mingus, Bill Evans, Thelonius Monk, Ben Webster, and offcourse Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie etcc

I hate the brand name smooth jazz because it makes it seem as if everything that is played is just something made commercially and for use in an elevator or something. It makes it seem like whatever the players did was interesting but they didn't want to over do themselves and actually make something boldly. This is not Smooth Jazz.
